Summary The Advanced Practice Sonographer-Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center focus (APS-FDTC) functions as a highly experienced sonographer, working with the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center (FDTC) and Fetal Therapy Program. The role and responsibilities extend beyond those of a staff sonographer. These responsibilities are focused on the performance of a full range of diagnostic ultrasound procedures in the outpatient and inpatient setting. The primary functions will be to assist with scanning and evaluation of patients with low-risk and complex pregnancies, assist with procedures, and to support the operations of the FDTC ultrasound unit. The secondary function is to support the Fetal Therapy program. This role will also assist in the training and guidance of ultrasound sonographers and include participation in clinical research studies and training of medical trainees and staff. The activities are performed in accordance with facility policies and procedures and applicable professional standards. Excellent medical, dental and vision coverage effective on your very first day 2:1 Match on retirement savings Responsibilities* Fetal Imaging Skills Full-time, weekday presence at the FDTC to support obstetric imaging program. Flexibility regarding four-day or five-day workweek. Possible participation in weekend or off hours procedures (expected to be rare). Proficiency in obtaining views beyond OB standard and detailed ultrasound examinations. Proficiency in pulse wave, color power, and color Doppler examination of the fetus. Proficiency in m-mode evaluation of cardiac rhythms. Proficiency in anomaly specific imaging protocols. Proficiency in monitoring multiple gestations. Ability to use two-dimensional, or three-dimensional image acquisition and manipulation techniques. Provide intraoperative ultrasound guidance for invasive fetal procedures such as intrauterine transfusion, cordocentesis, radio-frequency ablation, and shunts. Provide ultrasound guidance for needle-based procedures in the FDTC. Review of ultrasound examinations performed by sonographers and trainees to assess the quality and completeness of the imaging. Provides re-scanning support and/or directs sonographers and trainees to obtain additional images as needed. Provides preliminary report of findings in both verbal and written formats and communicates with physician staff and patients. May present or assist in preparation of imaging cases for educational purposes. Support sonography team building, morale, and performance. May need to assume responsibilities of Lead Obstetrical Sonographer specific to the supervision of ultrasound operations during emergency situations or coverage for meetings. May support Fetal Therapy Program in absence of the Advanced Practice Sonographer, Fetal Therapy Focus. Equipment Use and Maintenance Work with staff to ensure that ultrasound and relevant equipment is functioning properly. Work with FDTC leadership to ensure that FDTC ultrasound and procedure supplies are stocked. Provide education and training to sonographers and trainees in the utilization of new equipment features/benefits or scanning techniques. Documentation and Reporting Assist physicians in generation of ultrasound reports that represent key findings in low-risk and complex patients. Document any incidental findings that may impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician. Quality Assessment/Quality Improvement, in collaboration with sonographer and physician leaders Assist to ensure that sonography examination studies and results meet the facility standard for quality assurance. Assist to ensure quality patient care with the team. Function as a technical or clinical leader/expert in sonography. Assist in the creation, oversight, and implementation of scanning protocols and quality control and improvement activities. Provide technical, image quality, and accuracy oversight for the assessment of sonography examinations. Support FDTC efforts to ensure that appropriate accreditation is secured and maintained. Pursue and maintain cutting-edge technical and clinical updates. Professional Development Assist with FDTC research projects. Assist in the mentoring and professional development of staff. Health Care Team Interaction Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers, administrators, and other members of the health care team. Assist in the education and training of sonography students, physician residents and fellows, and other learners that engage with Obstetric Sonography. Required Qualifications* EDUCATION /EXPERIENCE: ? Graduation from ultrasonographic training program is necessary.? Five years of experience in a full service teaching hospital, high-risk obstetrical service and transplant service is necessary.? Registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical-Sonographers in Abdomen and OB-GYN specialties is necessary.? Some knowledge of aseptic techniques, infection control, universal precautions and safety is necessary.? Some knowledge of radiation safety is necessary.? Some knowledge of medical terminology is necessary.? Extensive sonography education, training, and experience in the specialty area(s) to be performed.? Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and lifelong learning.? Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills and software programs for documentation and research activities, and report generation.? State sonographer licensure, if becomes applicable.? Ability to provide ultrasound guidance for basic and advanced invasive procedures.? Demonstrated proficiency in three- and four-dimensional imaging, and obstetrical Doppler studies.? Proficiency in fetal echocardiography or willingness to acquire fetal echocardiography skillset is preferred. CORE COMPETENCIES: ? In-depth knowledge of fetal anatomy and development by trimester.? In-depth knowledge of fetal, placental and uterine conditions diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound.? Advanced knowledge of ultrasound examination procedures that define and/or quantify stage or severity of fetal or placental conditions.? Ability to recognize ultrasound appearance of complications that may result from fetal diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.? Ability to manage time. Meets attendance/punctuality requirements.? Ability to adapt to changing work environments, work priorities, and organizational needs with enthusiasm and energy. Takes independent action to address and resolve problems.? Ability to expresses ideas effectively and demonstrate sound judgment regarding decision-making.? Ability to deal with others in a direct, honest manner and comply with all Michigan Medicine policies and procedure. Work Schedule Specific vision abilities required by this job include 20/40 vision and the ability to adjust focus.The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.Work is indoors at the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Labor & Delivery, and the operating rooms.Standard office hours are 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Flexibility to work hours may be required to meet the demands of the position pending fetal therapy surgical case times.
