The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI), named Best Rehabilitation Hospital in Indiana in 2022 and 2023, provides quality rehabilitation services to those facing life-changing injuries or illness. We specialize in the areas of brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and complex medical conditions. RHI is the only Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model System in the state of Indiana and one of only 16 in the U.S. Our campus on the west side of Indianapolis specializes in inpatient and outpatient evidence-based, patient-centered therapy for ages 15 and older. SUMMARY/PURPOSE OF JOB The Pharmacy Technician-Supplemental is responsible for performing designated tasks and duties relative to prepackaging unit dose preparations, Pyxis management, code cart inventory checks, medication outdate inspections, Cardinal ordering, and front counter duties as needed.Understands and exhibits the principals of service excellence, leads by example, and mentors' others in the performance of their assigned duties. Additionally, understands that every employee is responsible for exhibiting exceptional customer service by answering call lights on the nursing unit and if not able to assist personally, will inform the appropriate employee regarding the patient's need. Understands the role of employee's individual position regarding HIPAA requirements and level of access to Protected Health Information as defined in HIPAA hospital-wide policies. Understands that it is the responsibility of every RHI staff member to provide patient safety as a priority response according to RHI evidence-based practices. Encourages patients to be actively involved in their own care as patient safety strategy. JOB DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Refills Pyxis and checks for all outdates according to written departmental work standards. Delivers all bulk medications not loaded in Pyxis and return unused or discharged patients meds back to the pharmacy. Updates Cerner formulary with new items and price changes on items that are ordered from suppliers (master's and Cardinal Health). Maintain bar code scanning for all medications within the hospital. Charge and credit patient's medications in Cerner. Cleans own work area and maintains cleanliness of areas and unit dose machine as assigned by supervisor. Restocks code carts and outpatient areas as assigned. Does monthly outdate checks on all code carts and maintain accurate records of this process. Do daily unit checks to ensure that meds are not left out on the unit and have patient names and expiration dates when required. Performs courier tasks to include deliveries of medication into Pyxis and supplies to patient care areas to ensure continued patient care. Performs up-front counter tasks to include answering telephone and routing call or taking accurate messages and attending to customers at counter. Credits returned medications, stores reusable merchandise on shelves, and destroys all unusable items. Ensures that the Monthly Refrigerator Log are up to date. Performs all prepackaging tasks including preparing labels, obtaining medications, recording lot numbers, prepackaging medications manually or with machine, and performing basic and routine compounding procedures following department protocol under direction of pharmacist. Participates in continuous quality improvement activities and observes measures to ensure Hospital, Joint Commission, CARF and other quality standards and regulations are met. Uses appropriate technique in performing duties to avoid or minimize accidents and injury related to unsafe practice. Proactively seeks information and resources, including the Environment of Care Manual, to aid in safe performance of duties to contribute to the RHI culture of safety. Pharmacy interns to perform delegated and supervised duties by the pharmacist as approved. and outlined by the Indiana State Board of Pharmacy and Indiana Professional Licensing Agency Laws and Regulations i.e., patient counseling, MTM, transferring of patient prescriptions, etc. Other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES Requires knowledge of and familiarity with medical and drug terminology, drug products, location of stock and supplies, etc. Requires knowledge of procedures for pre-packaging machine and maintaining necessary records. Requires knowledge of procedures for writing credits for returned medication and location of stock. Requires knowledge of procedures for taking inventory; and maintaining narcotic records, prescriptions, etc. Requires the ability to interpret drug orders for Pyxis interface and knowledge of procedures for filling Pyxis. Bilingual capability (Spanish/English) strongly preferred. EXPERIENCE No experience required, but one to six months in a pharmacy setting preferred. Position requires the utilize computer systems. SPECIAL TRAINING, LICENSURE, CREDENTIALING Valid Indiana Pharmacy Technician License National certification required upon hire or within 12 months of hire date. Pharmacy Interns hired as pharmacy techs are not required by the Indiana State board of pharmacy to obtain a separate pharmacy tech license or a National Certification. Pharmacy Interns must have an Intern License issued by the state of Indiana. EDUCATION Position requires high school diploma or equivalent. Additional coursework preferred. Intern License or Pharmacy Tech License Pharmacy interns enrolled in a pharmacy program.
